The August first-time unemployment insurance filers report holds some promise. It was the lowest year-over-year increase seen by the state Labor Department since January 2008 (18.2 percent in August; 7.2 percent in January 2008).

Commissioner Michael L. Thurmond >Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond: "The pace of new layoffs is decelerating. However, a rising number of laid-off workers are remaining unemployed longer."

>Reports from Floyd, Bartow, Gordon, Polk and Chattooga counties all show drops--including more than 500 people in Floyd--compared to July 2009.

>But compared to August 2008, each county saw increases ranging from 13.8 percent in Chattooga to 74.3 percent in Floyd.

>Floyd led the region in first-time filers, 1,046 people, followed by Bartow and then Gordon.
>Most of the initial claims were filed by laid-off workers in manufacturing, wholesale and retail trade, construction, and administrative and support services.
