>First-time claims for state unemployment insurance benefits climbed again in April in five Northwest Georgia counties when compared to the same month in 2008. But state Labor Department numbers also show a significant month-over-month decrease in Floyd and Polk counties when comparing March and April reports.
>Floyd had 1,570 first-time claims, up almost 88 percent from 837 in April 2008 but down more than 1,000 from the March report.
>Bartow reported a 118 percent increase in claims, 1,464 last month vs. 740 a year earlier, and a slight increase from March as well.
>Gordon's count was up 84 percent from April 2008 but did see a 224-person drop from the March report.
>Another large month-over-month drop occurred in Polk County. Some 923 people filed claims last month, down from 1,650 in March but up nearly 55 percent from a year earlier.
>Recent employment news: Trinity rail cars announced 659 layoffs in Cartersville; Super Kmart and HON both cut staff by 80 positions; Shaw idled 390 in Calhoun; Kobelco laid off and/or reduced hours to 144. Plus loss of three Goody's stores; two Office Depot stores; and Circuit City.
Greater Rome Bank's earnings topped $1.28 million in 2008, just below the previous year: Shareholders heard bank executives outline how they navigated a year that left many community banks in tough shape. Huge win for Berry as Vikings head to first NAIA World Series: Andrew Starr had a walkoff single in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Berry baseball team a 7-6 win over Saint Xavier on Thursday in the Championship Game of the Opening Round of the NAIA National Tournament hosted at Berry's William R. Bowdoin Field. With the win Berry (45-14) advances to the NAIA Avista World Series in Lewiston, Idaho on May 22-29> Details
