Shorter's nursing school joining Riverbend Center's medical community

Riverbend>Around the first of the year, the office of Dr. Vanice W. Roberts, dean of Shorter College's School of Nursing, should be in operation in part of the Coosa Clinic (bottom right corner of drawing) area at Riverbend Center. In addition to Kroger, Barnes & Noble and other retailers, the center also is home to a core group of medical offices. The first phase of the nursing school will be mostly offices with the instructional side coming next. Phase two will be home to classrooms, labs and other cirriculum-based needs, says Dawn Tolbert, Shorter's director of institutional relations. Shorter's program is in the final steps of approval (archive). Shorter's deal with Ledbetter Properties continues to build on the medical mix between Turner McCall and Second Avenue. Northwest Georgia Medical Clinic moved into the Ledbetters' new Riverbend Medical Center behind the retail/medical campus in June. Additional clients are expected as is a motel.  For more on Shorter's nursing program, click Shorter

Wednesday's Buzz:

-Digital signs to flash urgent messages--just in Case(y): Remember the rumblings a few years back when then-Secretary of State Cathy Cox ran a series of TV public service announcements right before her bid for governor? The digital ads in Rome showing Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and an "upcoming" announcement are doing the same thing. Cagle is working with Georgia Emergency Management Agency, the GBI and Outdoor Advertising Association of Georgia to "quickly post emergency information" via the state's 75 digital signs including two in Rome and we believe the one in Calhoun as well. .The boards will flash details on missing children, hurricane or other emergency evacuations, severe weather, etc. For now, you're seeing Cagle's mug on the ad rotation. He's running for governor in 2010.

-Keep politics in Christmas: One of the latest Saxby Chambliss ads on the radio features the normal voice rhetoric with a twist. Some of the words and definitely the background music reflect the Christmas season.

-Musselwhite named to Sante Fe Film Festival's jury: Harry Musselwhite, the artistic director of the Rome International Film Festival, has been appointed as a juror for the Santa Fe Film Festival. One of the nation's premiere film festivals, it features film work and artists from across the globe, and is noted for its Luminaria Award. Among those serving on the jury are recent Academy Award winner Alan Arkin (Little Miss Sunshine) and actor Ali McGraw (Love Story, The Escape)."I am pleased to be asked to serve the Santa Fe Film Festival," said Musselwhite. "I have a special place in my heart for Santa Fe, having performed there early in my career as a member of the Santa Fe Opera, and I enjoy returning to one of my favorite cities in an official role."
Musselwhite previously served the festival as a guest curator and recently had a script optioned by Santa Fe film producer Valentine de Vargas.  The Rome festival is preparing for its sixth year, with the film submission process starting in January.

-A voice from the past: Friends of longtime K98 newsman Ed McIntyre will be glad to literally hear he's back on the air in Mount Airy, N.C. "Mr. Ed" is working Mondays-Wednesdays from 2-6 p.m., spinning bluegrass at WPAQ 740 AM. Listen beginning at 2 p.m. today. Do they have a "Mr. Ed's Challenge"?> WPAQ

-Three-and-out for the air show? That's the buzz we're hearing about what had become a fall regular at Richard B. Russell Regional Airport. The third edition was a challenge and it appears a fourth year isn't going to happen. Air show

-A 'fresh' Subway:  The new shop on Maple Avenue in Lindale is open.
