A pledge to help make America the 'Healthiest Nation'
In a candid address, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told Rome/Floyd County leaders the priority in health care must be nutrition, exercise, healthy habits and proactive screenings. Dr. Julie Gerberding says such steps will eliminate many of the health needs existing today--and tomorrow. She asked the community to join with the Healthiest Nation Alliance--and left The Forum with a commitment to do just that. For more, please see Tricia Steele's detailed report on Health

Fired Model coaches charged with sexual assault; MHS 'parapro' fired:
The latest developments in the continuing investigation of teacher-student conduct at Model High School:
-Matthew Blanton, Model's basketball coach who was fired by the school board Tuesday night on allegations of having inappropriate contact with a student, has now been charged with sexual assault. Blanton was booked into the Floyd County Jail at 6:44 p.m. Thursday and is scheduled for a first appearance/bond hearing Friday.
-Daniel Brown, the second Model coach, also has been arrested on similar charges, according to today's Rome News.
-Jamie Taylor, a paraprofessional employed at Model High School, has been fired by the Floyd County School System. Additional information was not available Thursday night as the school system cited the ongoing investigation of teacher-student involvement at the school.
-Blanton and Brown were fired by the school board Tuesday night following accusations that both had inappropriate contact with students in unrelated incidents. Both men waived any appeal options.
-Because Taylor is a paraprofessional, the termination did not require action by the school board. The dismissal was handled by school board administrators.
-An criminal investigation by the police department is continuing.
Comcast could lose WXIA, WATL, WeatherPlus: A letter sent by Comcast's Stacy Cole to Rome City Manager John Bennett details the possible loss of NBC affiliate WXIA Channel 11, WATL (channel 9) and WeatherPlus (channel 194) on the Comcast menu if a new agreement can't be struck between the station's owner, Gannett Broadcasting Inc., and the cable giant. The current agreement ends Dec. 18 and, says Cole's letter, Comcast can't carry the Gannett stations without a new agreement. A "crawl" has been added to The Weather Channel to alert local subscribers of the possible loss of those channels.
