Friday updates from www.hometownheadlines.com

Weekend Buzz

>Not quite the end of SBDC? The buzz: It seems there might be some face time from Small Business Development Center representatives in Rome a few days a week after the center closes at Heritage Hall Tuesday. A small office is being sought, says a tipster. We also hear a "Hail Mary" pass to save the full-service office failed.

>Another planning commission without Seven Hills: The town center retail magnet proposed for U.S. 411 near Wal-Mart is again missing from the planning commission agenda next Thursday. For what is up for discussion, click Agenda

>Thanking the Rome City Schools' teacher, support employee of the year nominees: A banquet is set for Oct. 14 to honor the nominees and name the 2010 winners. For the lists, please click Buzz

>Debating the debate: Should John McCain and Barack Obama meet for a debate at 9 tonight at the University of Mississippi, D&C political columnists Graham Dixon and Adam Clemons will be watching, writing. Updates Saturday.

>Endorsement season begins: U.S. representatives Phil Gingrey, Nathan Deal pick up business support; educators supporting Barbara Massey Reece> Politics

>Endorsing the competition: A prominent Northwest Georgia restaurant owner was spotted at Ru San's over lunch Thursday. Asked whether he was checking out the competition,  this owner of one of our more eclectic restaurants quickly shot back: "I've eaten here six times already (since it opened). I'd be here for breakfast if they were open."  Tempura biscuits? Also: Ru San himself was here last week.

>Signs of the times: Our 46-degree low Thursday morning was one of two sure signs of fall. The other: The hay and corn stalks lining the soon-to-be pumpkin patch at Trinity United Methodist Church on Turner McCall. Those gorgeous gourds arrive at noon Sunday.
