Thursday's Buzz

>Lots of banking buzz in Rome/Floyd again: It's been a good two-plus years since we've seen a community bank come to life and conditions today are far different. That said, talk is swirling about a possible mixture of "medical money" with another major player in town plus some "available" banking talent for a new venture. And we hear it could be a blended creature, not just banking.

>Strange political year takes another turn: With Kevin Salmon's withdrawal, look for a tidy race between Jason Lewis and Jack Niedrach for superior court judge. Every campaign cycle has some twists and turns but this race drew attention because of last-minute entrants. It was assumed that Larry Salmon would seek a new term although he didn't qualify early in the week as is custom. Just before the noon deadline, Niedrach, Lewis and K. Salmon qualified. Now a week into prime time, only two candidates remain. Meanwhile: Write-in talk in one race continues.

>The hottest story in development circles isn't in the news this week. The Rome/Floyd Planning Commission meets today and there's nary a mention of Seven Hills Town Center, the massive retail center planned off U.S. 411 near the East Rome Wal-Mart. Environmental concerns have the project--already blessed by regional planners with some concerns--stalled for now. On the agenda: medical offices near Riverside. The planning commission meets at 2:30 this afternoon> Planning

>The biggest media story in Rome: Will anyone step up to provide live coverage of Rome High football now that Q102 is going "TBS" on the Wolves by opting for the "game of the week"? Webcasting is an option.(We're a 'maybe' but it is a long shot at this point).

>The biggest media story in Georgia: The AJC sports department. College fan sites, sports journalism blogs ajc.com and others are buzzing with "what's next" reports on fall football. Our posting last week of AJC staffers accepting the exit packages attracted more than 1,000 "views" from Rivals.com, Fanhouse, Georgiasports, SportsJournalists and Dawgsonline. There's a reason. Among those taking the buyouts are Stan Awtrey, Tony Barnhart, Scott Bernarde, Karen Rosen and Matt Winkeljohn. Furman Bisher continues on bizarre contract basis from what we hear. No Barnhart this fall? Boooooo.

>AJC's Maria Saporta announces her exit in a column today that also features an update on Frank Barron's appointment to cancer coalition board and still more on former Pirelli top guy Guy Mannino and those ZAP cars > AJC

>The most underplayed story: Rocket Wheeler. The first skipper of the Rome Braves won his 1,000th game as a manager Monday as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans--with a rehabbing Tom Glavine on the mound--pounded the Kingston Indians 17-2. Nice job, Rocket Man.
