Wednesday's Buzz:

>Politics: The Leigh Patterson-Dan Morgan race for district attorney is under way with Morgan yard signs out and about; Patterson is going big with signage (including 12th and Maple). Also spotted near Callier Springs: the first Bud Gammon for Congress yard sign.

>Write on? There are whispers of a write-in campaign this November--no, not for Garry Fricks' commission seat--but for another county office. More should those whispers grow louder. Fricks was absent from Tuesday's County Commission hearing. Commissioners got an earful at a recent meeting (RealFastNews.com)

> Georgia Music Magazine Georgia Music magazine readers get a musical tour of Rome, RIFF:

Harry Musselwhite takes readers of the summer edition on a "tour" of Rome's performing artists and venues in a two-page spread (pages 18-19). Accompanying the story is a short on the musical accompaniments planned at the Sept. 4-7 Rome International Film Festival. Those highlights include music documentaries (Squirrel Nut Zippers) as well as the Alloy Orchestra of Boston's help with RIFF's presentation of the silent films version of Phantom of the Opera>  Georgia Music.

> So much for clipping coupons from the newspaper: Kroger and Cellfire have teamed up to offer shoppers mobile coupons.  Stores in Georgia are among those linked into the system. Click Coupon

>Let your fingers do the typing ...: It looks like fingers and advertising are walking away from the Yellow Pages, according to a new study by Borrell Associates.  Local online efforts and other factors will suck $5 billion out of the yellow book market, Borrell says> Study

>No litter with this online litter questionnaire: Look for word soon of a new local survey concerning litter and what the community can do to clean up our image.

>Dining: Los Amigos on East 12th Street is doing fine under new ownership. The chips, carrots and entrees remain wonderful, and cervezas also are available again.

Also today:

>No sales tax starting Thursday -- and a less-taxing commute? We are not making this up: "The Georgia Department of Transportation will curtail construction-related lane closures from Thursday, July 31, through Sunday, Aug. 3, to ease public access to major retail venues during the state's sales tax holiday weekend. Each day from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m., beginning Thursday and continuing through Sunday, there will be no construction-related lane closures on interstate and state highways within a five-mile radius of a shopping mall or major retail shopping district." It goes on to exclude the connector mess in Atlanta.

++Getting ready for the sale: Shoppers at Staples and the East Rome Wal-Mart saw the first signs of the tax holiday event on Tuesday. Displays, kiosks and related materials were going up, awaiting shoppers this week. Wal-Mart even has a handy list of what's covered and what's not. For more, click Buzz

>Slow going with primary runoff: Turnout remains slow for advance voting in the primary runoff. The only item on the ballot is the U.S. Senate race between  Democrats Vernon Jones and Jim Martin. As of 1 p.m. Tuesday, 44 people had voted at the Civic Center polling station. Voting there and at the county offices on Fourth Avenue continues through 7 p.m. Friday.

Rough night for Rome Braves catchers
