Braves give fans something extra to celebrate: 5-4 win
A huge fireworks display erupted over State Mutual Stadium Tuesday night as part of the Rome Braves' annual tribute to America. The rebounding Braves gave fans a bonus: a 5-4 win and two-game sweep of the Columbus Catfish. For more on the game, click Sports

>Highlands, KSU unite in Dallas: Tuesday's announcement of a joint effort by Georgia Highlands and Kennesaw State University confirms the Board of Regents' recent references to expanded operations in booming Paulding County as well as parts of Cobb and Douglas County. According to recent minutes: Paulding County "is doubling in population and has a strong tie to Kennesaw State University and the Cartersville Center at Georgia Highland College." GHC is in a planning mode overall with a new building earmarked for the Cartersville campus in 2011.
>Microtel coming to U.S. 41 south of QuikTrip: Signs for the hotel--the third opened or announced for the Cartersville area in recent months--are up. The chain is on a growth spurt in Georgia with a prototype just opened in Woodstock> Mictrotel
>Licks N Sticks due at Ridge Ferry: The deal we reported last week appears done. Look for the 2008 edition of Licks N Sticks to be at Ridge Ferry Park on July 26. >Roadwork suspended for holiday: DOT is scaling back its construction projects across Northwest Georgia suspending related lane closures on all interstate and major state system highways, including the concrete paving project on I-75 between Barrett Parkway and Glade Road through Sunday to ease the 4th of July weekend traffic congestion. Beginning at noon, Thursday, and continuing until 5 a.m., Monday, there essentially will be no scheduled lane closures on any Northwest Georgia interstate highway or primary state route.
Primary 2008/Two weeks to primary and endorsements lining up: The key race in Floyd County this primary is clerk of court, a Democrats-only contest between John Harkins and Barbara Penson. With two weeks to go, the candidates are cementing their support. On Harkins' Web site: Former Floyd schools Superintendent Kelly Henson as well as some of the name partners from Brinson, Askew, Berry as well as former Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice Norman Fletcher and Scott Akemon, chairman of the local Democratic Party. and Democrats for Victory.
