Politics
>Fricks' traffic case sends a ripple through political networks: Briefly Monday, there was talk of organizing a push to qualify an independent candidate to oppose Post 2 County Commissioner Garry Fricks in November. The calendar makes it almost impossible. Four weeks from today, a candidate would need to have petitions signed by 5 percent of the county's registered voters--that's 2,167 of Floyd's 43,339 voters as of June 1. Fricks, a Republican, is unopposed in the July 15 primary and no Democrats qualified although a few considered it. Fricks faces traffic charges after being stopped for allegedly speeding in Calhoun Friday night. The charges include driving with a suspended license, no insurance and improper tag. Said Fricks: "I screwed up." We doubt a resignation is pending--or warranted.
Dining
Biggest buzz of Monday was... Five Guys: As late as 10:45 p.m. Monday, we received quick reviews of first-time encounters at the Five Guys' counter. Included:
>"I thought it was one of the best burgers I had every had and the fries were hot and flavorful. Very much like the Varsity fries only thicker... My wife was not as impressed; said Fuddruckers' burger was a bit better"-- BH
>"It was good although not something I can have every day. The little hamburger would have been sufficient even though I ordered the regular. The French fries were enough to serve three or four people."-- JM
>"You had to mention Steak 'N Shake again? You're killin' me! Maybe a little prodding will get them to get going on the Rome store. I'm sure Five Guys is fine but I need Steak 'N Shake!"-- MS, who went to college blocks from the original and was a frequent diner who occasional even sought refuge there.
