Floyd County Sheriff's Office Participating in NADDI Drug Drop Box Program

Media Release: Many people have encountered a situation where they have had a prescription medication and discontinued taking it or simply no longer needed it. Even more common, is in the unfortunate time of a loved one's passing, you are left with many prescription medications and no idea what to do with them. Doctors and Pharmacies cannot accept them and flushing them is not an option as it leads to contamination of the water supply. Tossing them in the trash is also a concern to public health.

The Floyd County Sheriff's Office now offers an option with a Prescription Drug Drop Box from the National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators (NADDI) through a grant from Endo Pharmaceuticals, and the National Rx Drug Drop Box program.

The NADDI prescription Drug Drop Box program addresses a public health and safety issue because medications that remain in the home are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. Many studies have shown that individuals who abuse prescription drugs often obtain them from family and friends. Removing unneeded or expired drugs from the home greatly reduces the chance they will be diverted for abuse.

Through the grant from Endo Pharmaceuticals, the NADDI Prescription Drug Drop Box program will allow individuals to easily and properly dispose of unneeded, expired, or unwanted medications. "This program serves a need in our community." said Floyd County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Tom Caldwell. "It allows people an opportunity to dispose of these medications properly with no questions asked."

The secure prescription drug drop box is located in the bonding lobby of the Floyd County jail and is available 24 hours a day. You can dispose of any prescription medication. However, we do not accept liquids or syringes.
