Betsey Popham named Floyd Medical Center’s 2013 Nurse of the Year,

Media release: Betsey Popham has been named Floyd Medical Center's 2013 Nurse
of the Year, as part of Floyd's celebration of Nurses Week.
Popham has been a nurse in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab at Floyd for 7
years. In nominating her, Popham's co-workers cited the compassionate care
she provides for her patients and the outstanding commitment she exhibits to
Floyd and to those she works with.

"I don't think I've ever worked with anyone who is as much of a team player
as Betsey is," said Mary Jane Hamilton, Clinical Coordinator for Floyd's Cath
Lab. "She shows this all the time by being the first to learn new
procedures and for always stepping up to mentor new employees. Her positive
attitude is contagious."

Hamilton was quick to point out that employees are not the only ones who
benefit from Betsy's servant leadership. "Patients absolutely love Betsey,"
Hamilton continued. "We always receive positive feedback from them and
their families when she provides their care."

The nomination proved enough of a surprise for Popham. Hearing her name
called as recipient came as a second, and even greater, shock. "It's such an
amazing feeling, I'm so appreciative," Popham said. "I feel like there are
so many other nurses here that are more deserving. I just can't believe
it."

Popham says the traits mentioned in her nomination are second nature to her.
She believes they come from the idea that she treats others in the same way
she, herself, would like to be treated. "What I do just comes naturally,"
Popham continued. "I love caring for patients and I'm honored to be
recognized for it."

Christy Barrow was runner up for the award. Barrow, an Inpatient Surgery
nurse, has also been with Floyd for 7 years.

In addition to Nurse of the Year, Floyd awarded three other individuals for
professional achievements over the past year. Tammy Greene was named
Certified Nursing Assistant of the Year, Tracy Morgan received the award for
Surgical Tech of the Year and Stephanie Boyd received the Nancy Gunther
Award, which goes to a graduating nursing student who has demonstrated
outstanding care while completing their education at Floyd.
These awards are presented each year during Floyd's recognition of Nurses
Week, which takes place annually in May and honors nurses for the care they
provide.
