Media release: Calling all youth ages 7 to 15! RACE Rome and Rome Orthopaedic Center's 5th Annual Tri for the Kids Youth Triathlon will take place Sunday, May 5, at 9 a.m. at Darlington School.
"This fun, safe race is perfect for novice and seasoned triathletes," said event coordinator Beth Smith, who teaches kindergarten at Darlington. "New this year, race categories have been expanded to include expert, beginner and physically challenged."
Participants ages 7-9 will complete a 50-yard swim in the school's Huffman Athletic Center swimming pool, a 2.3-mile bike ride on Cave Spring Road (closed to traffic during the race) and a .5-mile run on the campus. Ages 10-15 will complete a 100-yard swim, 4.6-mile bike ride and 1-mile run.
The expert category is open to youth who have completed three or more triathlons and want to take it to the next level of competition. The beginner race is open to youth just starting triathlons or who wish for a slightly less competitive atmosphere. The physically challenged division is open to youth who need assistance competing or who need a modified distance. These athletes will complete a distance appropriate for each.
Races are USAT sanctioned, and awards will be given to top finishers. All racers will receive medals. Registration is $40 and a limited number of scholarships are available.
"It amazes me that five years ago not many youth in Northwest Georgia had heard of triathlons, let alone completed one," Smith said. "Now more than 300 youth each year come to compete for a great cause -- the Boys & Girls Club. Come join us as a competitor, volunteer or cheerleader!"
Since 2009, Tri for the Kids has raised over $75,000 for the Boys & Girls Club of Rome. Help RACE Rome reach a total of $100,000 this year! For more information and to register, visit racerome.org, email bsmith@darlingtonschool.org, or call 706-296-7103.
