Media release:The Rome-Floyd Sports Hall of Fame was started in 1971 in order to recognize local amateur and professional athletes and those who contribute to the growth and development of sports.
The Rome-Floyd Sports Hall of Fame announces four inductees into the 2013 Rome-Floyd Sports Hall of Fame:
Lamar Wright
Professional Athlete
Lamar Wright will be honored in the 2013 Sports Hall of Fame as a Professional Athlete and recognized for his professional baseball career. He was drafted upon graduation from Shorter College in 1974 by the California Angels and ultimately reached AAA level. He made rapid strides through the Angels organization in less than two full seasons.
Ray Brown
Amateur Athlete
Ray Brown will be honored in the 2013 Sports Hall of Fame as an Amateur Athlete and recognized for his outstanding prep career in high school where he was a member of two state champion football teams in 1977 and 1978. After accepting a football scholarship to Clemson, he became the first player in the school's history to start at least one game in five different seasons.
Nick Hyder
Lifetime Achievement
The late Nick Hyder will be honored in the 2013 Sports Hall of Fame for Lifetime Achievement to pay tribute to his amazing coaching abilities as a high school coach. He began his coaching at West Rome High School where his career record was 302-48-5. He left West Rome in 1974 to become head football coach at Valdosta. His accomplishments led him to be inducted into the Carson-Newman College Hall of Fame, the Valdosta-Lowndes County Hall of Fame and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Hall of Fame.
Hugh Selman
Lifetime Achievement
Hugh Selman will be honored in the 2013 Sports Hall of Fame for Lifetime Achievement. Selman served as a coach at Armuchee High School for 27 years and has been recognized for implementing coaching techniques that were way ahead of his time. He coached several championship girls' softball teams and basketball teams. Selman was also responsible for forming several sports leagues for Armuchee including the school's baseball team, and football team.
Additionally, thirteen male and female college-bound high school seniors in Rome and Floyd County will be recognized for academic, athletic and community achievements. The program has provided over $67,000 in scholarship money to many extraordinary student athletes since the scholarship program was founded in 1993.

The annual Sports Hall of Fame banquet also recognizes individuals and organizations that have provided outstanding support for RFPRA recreational programs.
This year's ceremony will be held Monday, February 25 at the Krannert Center at Berry College. The evening consists of a reception, dinner banquet and awards ceremony. Tickets are still available and are $25. Tickets may be purchased in-person at 1 Shorter Avenue.
The cost of the Sports Hall of Fame program is solely supported by ticket sales and sponsorships. The event is hosted by the Rome-Floyd Sports Hall of Fame Committee and Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Authority. Nominations for the Rome-Floyd Sports Hall of Fame are submitted in four categories: Amateur Athletics, Professional Athletics, Meritorious Service and Lifetime Achievement.
