Mays Bridge Road at its current intersection with Burnett Ferry Road will be closed and through traffic will be detoured west to the intersection with Horseleg Creek Road. Traffic from Horseleg Creek Road to Mays Bridge Road will continue north through the intersection with Burnett Ferry Road and back to existing Mays Bridge Road, while traffic from Ausburn Road will turn left onto newly constructed road to access Mays Bridge Road. Signs will be placed along the detour route to help motorists navigate around the closed road. This construction operation and the local road closure it necessitates are weather permitting and subject to change.
"We understand that the closure of Mays Bridge Road at that location may cause some inconvenience for area residents, but it is necessary for relocating this road as quickly as possible, constructing this portion of West Rome Bypass and giving it back to the traveling public," explained DeWayne Comer, district engineer at the Georgia DOT office in Cartersville.
The relocation of Mays Bridge Road is part of a 5.478 mile project to widen and reconstruct the West Rome Bypass on State Route (SR) 1/US 27, beginning south of the Coosa River and extending to north of SR 20 in Floyd County. This project also includes the construction of ten bridges located within its limits. Work on this project began early November 2011 and the entire project is scheduled to be completed by the end of March 2015, at a construction cost of close to $43 million.
