Finalist are named for superintendent of Floyd County Schools

Media release: The Floyd County Board of Education has named two finalists in the search for a new superintendent for Floyd County Schools. Board members announced the finalists on Friday, October 19 after initial interviews from candidates interested in leading one of Georgia's top public school systems. The opening was created when current superintendent Dr. Lynn Plunkett announced her retirement earlier this year.  Dr. Plunkett will officially retire at the end of November after serving as superintendent of Floyd County Schools for the past five years.  

The two finalists are:

Dr. Jeffrey Bearden, superintendent of Fayette County Schools. Dr. Bearden has served as superintendent in Fayette County since January 2011. Prior to coming to Fayette County, he served as superintendent for District No. 35 in Eliot, Maine from 2007 to 2010. In education, Dr. Bearden has also been an assistant superintendent for business, district athletics administrator, assistant principal, social studies and language arts teacher and a coach.  He earned his doctor of education degree in educational leadership from Nova University, and his undergraduate and master's degree from University of Maine.  Dr. Bearden served in the United States Air Force from 1984 to 1988. 

Dr. Jeffrey McDaniel,chief of academics for Floyd County Schools.  Dr. McDaniel has worked for the system since 2003 and he has served in his current position for three years. He has also served as executive director of curriculum and director of school improvement for Floyd County Schools. Dr. McDaniel was in Polk County Schools before coming to Floyd County.  While in Polk County, he served as director of vocational programs, a school principal, assistant principal, and he was a middle school and high school math teacher.  Dr. McDaniel earned his doctor of education degree in educational leadership from the University of Georgia, his educational specialist degree and masters in educational leadership from the University of West Georgia and his undergraduate degree from Northwest Missouri State University.

The board has scheduled a called meeting for 8:30 a.m. Monday, November 5, to name the new superintendent for Floyd County Schools.
