Media release: The Six Mile Post, Georgia Highlands College's student newspaper, brought home 17 awards from the Georgia College Press Association's Press Institute in Athens, held Feb. 3 and 4. The paper won five first-place honors in the annual Better Newspaper Contest, four second-place and eight third-place awards. The awards fell within the two-year college division.
Individual winners included the following:
Casey Bass, first place, Best Column
Ross Rogers, first place, Best Review
Michael Davis, third place, Best Photograph – Editorial/Feature; second place, Photograph – News; third place, Best Feature Story
Kaitlyn Hyde – third place, Best Photograph, Sports; third place, Best Photo Essay
Andrew Calvert – first place, Photograph – Sports
Ryan Jones – third place, Best Photo Essay
Erin Baugh – first place, Best Entertainment Feature
Scott Hale – third place, Best Photo Essay
GHC also won several general awards, including third place for Best Website, second place for Improvement, first place for General Photography, third place for General Advertising, third place for Layout and Design, third place for Best Campus Community Service – Editorial, second place for Best Campus Community Service – Sports and third place for General Excellence.
The Georgia College Press Association elected Kaitlyn Hyde, chief photographer for the Six Mile Post, as the organization's secretary for the next year. Scott Hale will serve on the organization's executive board.
Other students attending the event were Jesse Beard, Andrew West, Christie Boyd, Neen Snowball and Sarah Lane. English Professor Kristie Kemper, Assistant Professor of English Cindy Wheeler and Instructor of English John Kwist accompanied the group.
