Media release: Last year, several dozen enthusiastic crews raised more than $120,000 for Cancer Navigators, the nonprofit that helps cancer patients on their journey through treatment and beyond. This year, Cancer Navigators is hoping to have at least 50 teams participate in its Cast Off Against Cancer. The 2012 kickoff and captains meeting is Feb. 7 at the Cancer Navigators office, 310 W. 10th St. An open house for the new office is set for 5-7 p.m.
The main celebration will be April 22 at the Harbin Clinic Tony E. Warren, M.D., Cancer Center from 2-6 p.m. It will feature a walk to the river for a memorial flower drop, music provided by the Broad and Third and other events. The Cancer Center is celebrating its first anniversary and will be joining in the benefit celebration.
Said Charlotte Atkins, Cancer Navigators executive director: "The enthusiasm the crews bring to this event is crucial to raising awareness about our mission as well as the funding that's so very needed now that we have our new office complex and an increasing number of cancer patients to serve."
Teams or crews as they are called for this fundraiser can be made up on 8-15 people determined to raise at least $1,000 as a group. A registration donation of $100 gets the crew a paddle to decorate and T-shirts for its team members. Honors will be awarded for Best Decorated Oar, Most Spirit and Most Money Raised.
Teams can sign up through Feb. 17. Details: 706-295-4119, e-mail info@cancernavigatorsga.org or visit the Facebook page
