Berry's Campus Carrier student newspaper claims eight honors in Georgia journalism contest

Media release: The Berry College student newspaper, Campus Carrier, claimed
a total of eight awards for journalism excellence in this year's Georgia
College Press Association Better Newspaper Contest. The newspaper received
the second place award for general excellence in its division at the annual
ceremony, held Feb. 4 at the GCPA Press Institute in Athens, Ga.

"I am beyond excited because this past year has not been easy by any means
and placing this well is a satisfying moment," said Ashley McIntyre, a
senior from Kennesaw, Ga., who currently serves as editor-in-chief for the
publication. "This is the one time that I am really sad that I am graduating
soon because I won't be here to build upon the foundation and the standards
set for next year."

Kevin Kleine, lecturer of journalism and student publications adviser, said,
"The effort that the Carrier staff puts in to keep the Berry community well
informed is impressive and these awards are a reflection of their
dedication. I am proud of every student involved on our newspaper staff."

Staff achievement within a variety of categories was awarded in the Senior B
Division, which includes all four-year Georgia colleges and universities
with enrollments under 8,000. Campus Carrier staff awards included:

• First place – Best Campus Community Service – News
• Second place – Best Campus Community Service – General Excellence
• Second place – Best Campus Community Service – Editorial Excellence
• Second place – General Advertising Excellence
• Third place – Best Campus Community Service – Features
• Third place – Best Campus Community Service – Sports
• Third place – General Photography Excellence
• Third place – Improvement

In addition to the awards won by the Campus Carrier during the GCPA Press
Institute, one Berry student was elected to a leadership position within the
organization. The new vice president of GCPA is Kelly Dickerson, a junior
communication and biology major. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Larry
Dickerson of Brandon, Fla.

The outgoing president of GCPA, Berry junior Matt Stokes, was given a plaque
recognizing his service during the past year to GCPA and Georgia journalism.
Stokes, a communication major, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gregory Stokes of
Roswell, Ga.

"I think something that our newspaper has traditionally done well is to
serve its community. We give our community what they need and that is
important to me," McIntyre said. "Second place is great, though its not
first, but that's ok. I am really pleased with the results and I am really
happy."
