-Turnout is forecast to be light, perhaps 10 to 15 percent, in local counties.
-Republican voters face a surprisingly large ballot; just one race for Democrats.
-Some residents in Bartow and Floyd are voting on the GOP nominee for House District 14 (Christian Coomer vs. Shep Helton).
-Gordon County residents have a school board and county commission race to decide; some also will vote in the Ninth Congressional District race.
-In Polk County, two Democratic candidates for County Commission.
-Perhaps the race with the most local interest: Preston Smith vs. Sam Olens for the Republican attorney general nomination.

Veteran banker Michael Baker joins Georgia Bank & Trust: Michael Baker, most recently a credit executive with Heritage First Bank in Rome, has joined Calhoun-based Georgia Bank & Trust as senior credit officer. Baker has nearly 30 years of banking experience and is active in the Northwest Georgia community.

Aug. 12/Rome Downtown Development Authority has busy agenda:
-Topics include downtown delivery methods and rules; the food/drink ratio discussions now before the Alcohol Control Commission; and a new awards program honoring volunteers, economic partnerships, business longevity and other areas. The meeting begins at 8:30 a.m. in the Carnegie Building.
-Big job gains for downtown; private investment, too: The DDA's monthly Main Street report shows a net gain of 70 jobs in the downtown zone so far this year. That includes 86 newly created spots and 16 lost by three downtown closings. Also key: $2,266,652 in total investment with $122,542 from public improvements, the rest from private (The Greener Burger, Johnny's New York Style Pizza, etc.)
Alison Smith leaving chamber, to open Perfect Dress of Rome: Alison Smith has been with the chamber for eight years, most recently as director of membership. She takes over what was known as The Wedding Belle, 2013 Shorter Ave., on Sept. 7.
Big month for sports legends in Northwest Georgia:
-Former University of Georgia football coach and athletics director Vince Dooley will sign "Vince's Garden: The Horticultural Journey of a Football Coach" on Friday at The Calhoun Depot beginning at 1:30 p.m. It is open to all. The event is hosted by The Calhoun-Gordon Council for a Literate Community.
-'A player to be named later.' Also this weekend, although the times are fluid, another sports headliner is scheduled to be in the region. We're working to confirm the visit.
