City Market to sell on courthouse steps today; teacher layoffs at Rome schools

Courthouse sale for City Market/238 Broad St. today?

-What started more than three years ago as a bid to bring wine sales and other upscale retail to Broad Street is expected to formally come to an end today with the foreclosure sale of 238 Broad St., better known as the site for the proposed Rome City Market. At one time, there was talk of the market being a prototype for similar ventures around the southeast. Today, after extensive renovations, the shop sits empty. As of Monday, no last-minute bail out materialized to stall the courthouse steps sale. There are lots of rumors for potential future uses, including a restaurant.

-Restaurant report: Another closing is rumored in Northwest Georgia in addition to the recent exits of Five Guys in Rome and Hearth & Harvest in Cartersville.

2010 off to better start in the stands for Rome Braves

-April wasn't a huge month at home for the Rome Braves with just eight games played at State Mutual Stadium. But those eight games were enough to see a 10.5 percent jump in attendance when to compared to all of 2009. The Braves, prior to Monday, averaged 3,124 tickets sold per game in 2010 vs. 2,826 in all of 2009. That's good enough for seventh place in the now 14-team South Atlanta League--which says something as Rome is the smallest market in the SAL.

-This week: 10:30 a.m. games today and Thursday. Wednesday, Friday, Saturday games at 7 p.m. (Suns win opener, 6-5). For more, click Rome Braves
