Building boom continues in heart of Rome

Even amid recession, workers busy at Rome's '$44 Million Club'

-Another round of layoffs, school budget cuts and other victims of the recession are all too evident in Greater Rome this month. But there's flip side to the economy, especially in a few blocks between Floyd Medical Center and the Oostanaula River. Bordered by Turner McCall, West Third Street and Second Avenue, you'll find large-scale construction projects mostly independent of one another. But together they show Rome's hot spot for growth, one powered by nearly $44 million in construction dollars with firm completion dates over the next three to 12 months. The photos were taken Wednesday and Thursday:

1) Harbin Clinic Cancer Center. Cost: $15 million. Completion: spring 2011.

2. The Specialty Hospital at Floyd Medical. Cost: $22 million. Due: February.

3. Barron Stadium enhancements. The turf, and related projects, are just part of renovations costing $3.37 million, SPLOST funded. New turf ready for fall; more to come.

4. Levy cut off Second Avenue. Cost: $1.9 million (SPLOST). Due: July.

5. Renovation of former Marines' Armory to new home for Rome-Floyd Parks & Rec. Cost: $1.6 million. SPLOST-funded. Due date: October. Click Buzz.
