Updates from downtown Rome:

-Maggie May's now at River Crossing: The popular Broad Street shop has moved to Second Avenue (Hawthorn Suites) with the formal opening today.

-The Greener Burger gets closer but . . . : Downtown workers and visitors Tuesday got a closer look at the new awning in front of the shop and continuing development work inside. A tentative opening is set for this month; our guess is more like mid May.

Guests get tour, updates on William S. Davies Homeless Shelter: For two hours Tuesday, a stream of city officials, guests and others joined the founder, board and staff at the William S. Davies Homeless Shelter for both updates and optimism. Amid tours of the women's and men's homes at 228/230 S. Broad St., guests heard about efforts to help shelter guests resume productive lives. Resume assistance, counseling and meals are part of the programs offered by the community-funded operation. That public support even includes knitted blankets and quilts assembled by church groups for each guest. Every form of donation--from leftover food from local events to furniture and clothing--is put to use, says Executive Director Allison Mitchell. Next up: The Faith Center, a permanent shelter and home for related ministries on property purchased at East 19th and Crane streets. To donate: click
