Braves open home season tonight; Publix bags Rome store report

A few change-ups as opening night arrives for Rome Braves

-By noon Thursday, tickets were selling fast for tonight's home opener for the Rome Braves.

-The return of minor league baseball, post-game fireworks and the ceremonial first pitch by retired broadcaster Pete Van Wieren has boosted demand for tickets as has the weather. And while there are other changes throughout the ballpark (click) --in addition to a mostly new team on the field--there are new things outside as well.

-Bella Roma Grill (photo, right) opened in December in the spot that was to be home to Hooters. Owner Eddie Hasko is ready for pre-and post-game fans--and will have a few options to offer.

-The restaurant's new deck is finished and it looks right into the outfield and Home Run Hill at State Mutual Stadium. While it would be tough to see some plays from the patio, tonight's fireworks show should be a huge draw.

-Hasko's original Bella Roma on U.S. 27 at Armuchee Village remains in full service. Hasko has heard whispers of the closing rumors, which he promptly dismisses. The site is under lease through December and, depending on new lease terms, Hasko says he has no plans to close it.

-First-pitch forecast: sunny skies, 81 degrees.

-Broadcaster Pete Van Wieren to throw ceremonial first pitch.

-Fast Ryde to perform National Anthem.

-Fireworks after the game.

-Braves lose third straight, 4-0, to Greenville. Record so far: 5-3.

Publix bags 'rumor no longer' claim by RNT: Thursday's posting by the Rome News heralding the arrival of Publix in Rome is news to the Lakeland-based grocer. Brenda Reid, the company's spokeswoman for much of the Southeast, checked two files on Thursday to see if there was anything official (i.e., signed deals) to report. "There's nothing confirmed for Floyd," says Reid. The latest report has the store anchoring a possible development by Madison Retail LLC on the site where the Hight Homes community is about to be leveled across from Floyd Medical Center. We've heard Publix "confirmations" before--on Shorter Avenue and on Martha Berry and near State Mutual Stadium and on the Bypass near U.S. 411 and at the Coosa Valley fairgrounds and near the East Rome Wal-Mart--and probably will again.

-And no trace of new Cartersville store, either: Reid said the updated openings list did not include the proposed Publix at Carter Grove Commons.

Aftermatch in Calhoun:

This picture shows a floor joist from the home destroyed Thursday afternoon following an explosion apparently caused by natural gas. No fatalities and just minor injuries were reported in the Saddlebrook community east of Interstate 75. For the latest photosgraphs and video, please click WSB TV.
