Labor chief Thurmond: Small business to the rescue?

-Georgia Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond believes investment in the state's small businesses will lead to critically-needed job growth. -Speaking at the open house of Cedartown's new career center, Thurmond says a combined federal, state and local boost of small business initiatives will create new jobs. Rather than a singular focus on the big companies, Georgia needs to concentrate on "small, local" businesses that represent "60 percent of our jobs."

-Thurmond joined a packed room at the career center  262 N. Park Blvd. just off the Cedartown Bypass. He told of local lobbying by community, church and political leaders to build the center.

Georgia Department of Labor Commissioner Michael L. Thurmond -Thurmond called labor employees "the unsung heroes . . . of this economic down turn."

-He thanked Polk for supporting his campaigns: "I carried Polk County every time I ran."

-The center was described as the "most energy efficient, greenest building in the state" by Jerry Garland, district 2 director of the labor department. Lighting, windows, plumbing--all were designed to meet tomorrow's environmental needs.

-Another nice local touch: the furnishings are from Cedartown-based HON.
