Hawthorn Suites' latest plan--add rooms to vacant restaurant space: In recent years, the riverfront restaurant off Second Avenue has been home to barbecue, Waterfront Grill & Bar and most recently Opi's. The latest plan is to convert the space into 23 additional rooms to expand Hawthorn Suites. It would give the downtown hotel 60 rooms in all, with the addition featuring one-and two-bedroom suites. Developer Ira Levy says the cost, around $1.5 million, is less than a third of what it would take to build a new wing of rooms. If financing is found, look for the conversion project to take 10 months. The new rooms would face the Oostanaula and the ground floor would feature waterfront patios. The Hawthorn opened in late 2005 in the former Battey Machinery building with 37 rooms as well as the River Crossing retail center. The restaurant space, vacant for years, opened as Waterfront. Various plans to expand Hawthorn had been proposed, including a new riverfront wing to one concept that took in the new parking deck. Future growth along the riverfront remains an option, Levy adds.
