Snow aftermath: What's open, closed Friday

 

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY THROUGH MIDNIGHT

5:45 p.m. status report:

-New/Rome City Schools closed Friday: Superintendent Gayland Cooper said icy roads are the main concern, not snow.

-New/Georgia Northwestern closes all campuses on Friday.

-Darlington's schedule will be announced by 6 a.m.

-Shorter College's schedule will be announced by 6:30 Friday morning.

-Awaiting updates from Gordon County, Cartersville City schools.

Rough commute home: Ice closes dozens of roads in Northwest Georgia including Bartow, Gordon, Chattooga, Whitfield counties: Red circles with white lines show roads closed by icy conditions> Click

-DOT says crews ready for roads: In Bartow,crews has trucks ready with plows and gravel/salt hopper spreaders. "We have 60 trucks mounted and ready to go," said Ken Howard, district maintenance engineer.   "If the temperatures dip below 25 degrees as predicted tonight, we usually add calcium chloride to the gravel/salt mixture we use for de-icing our roadways."

-Parks & Rec basketball games canceled tonight; Rome library closing at 6.

Schools & Colleges

-Unity closes Friday; classes resume Monday: Because of winter weather conditions expected Friday, Unity Christian School will be closed.

-St. Mary's School closed Friday: Because of anticipated icy and dangerous driving conditions, St. Mary's will be closing Friday, Jan. 8.

-Berry Elementary School and the Child Development Center will be closed Friday. The college is not in session.(

-Floyd County Schools closed Friday: Because of frozen precipitation and below freezing temperatures expected overnight, Floyd County Schools will cancel school for students and employees on Friday.  All buildings in Floyd County Schools should be closed for Friday. All afterschool activities and practices have been canceled for Thursday. All wrestling matches scheduled at Gordon Central on Friday have been moved to Saturday.  All Friday basketball games for Floyd County high schools are away games and are controlled by the host schools.  Floyd County principals are working with the host schools to make the best decision for the safety of our students.  The principals working with the superintendent's office will make the final decision on team participation in the event that the host school does not cancel a game. Scheduled Saturday games will not be affected at this time.

-Georgia Northwestern closes all campuses on Friday.

-Health departments in Bartow, Catoosa, Chattooga, Dade, Floyd, Gordon and Walker closed until 10 a.m. Friday: http://www.nwgapublichealth.org

-Rome/Floyd Parks & Rec cancels basketball games tonight.

-Rome/Floyd Library is closing at 6 tonight because of ice threat.

-RACA cancels Brian Taylor reception set for tonight.

-The Gordon County Recreation Department is canceling all adult and kids basketball games tonight.

-Retail Watch/Nunnelly Sales & Imports at 25 Shorter Industrial Blvd. isn't closing per se but is changing its overall operations. In addition to still selling the Big Green Egg grills, the business will now focus on special orders.
