900 fewer jobs in Rome last month

 

900 less jobs here last month vs. Nov. 2008; down 400 vs. October

The November report from the state Labor Department shows a 900-job year-over-year loss for Rome/Floyd County. Compared to October, the area lost 400 jobs in a month when hiring was supposed to pick up for the Christmas shopping season. Labor officials say the state's unemployment rate rose to 10.2 percent in November compared to 10.1 percent in October. The November 2008 rate: 7.1 percent.

-Rome's job loss, 2,2 percent, was among the smallest in the state; Dalton topped the list at 7.4 percent followed by Macon, down 5.8 percent.

- "Georgia's job market is mired in a prolonged and painful economic downturn," said State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond.  "The solution to America's economic crisis is job creation. The Georgia Department of Labor will host a bipartisan Jobs Summit on Jan; 18 at the Georgia Tech Hotel and Convention Center. We will bring together the best minds in the state to develop a state-level strategy that will help spur economic growth and job creation."
-Statewide, the over-the-year losses came in trade, transportation and warehousing, manufacturing, professional and business services, and construction

-Educational and health services added 13,800 jobs over the year. Also, from October to November, a total of 8,500 jobs were added in retail trade, public and private education, and health care.
