-New fodder for Rome voters -- picking a new police chief: With Police Chief Hubert Smith's retirement announcement, that means the Nov. 3 City Commission winners will play a part in appointing his successor -- and probably in the selection of several other senior city posts in the next few years.

-City Commission candidates forum set for Oct. 12> Politics

-GOPAC training session due in Rome Oct. 24: Rome Young Republicans are sponsoring a GOPAC training session on Saturday, Oct. 24, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Comfort Suites off U.S. 411 and Chateau Drive. The seminar is free but reservations are requested (RSVP to romeyoungrepublicans@gmail.com or 706-853-9014).  The session targets those interested in working on campaigns and those considering a run for public office. Tips on campaign tools, techniques, laws, fund raising guidelines and related topics are planned. Lunch will be provided as well.

-2009 chamber Expo down to final seven spots: The Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce's Business Expo has seven slots left for the two-day show at The Forum (Friday night, Nov. 6, is a members-only Business After Hours for the chamber; Saturday's event is open to all, 10 a.m.- 4 p.m., $3 adults; under 10, free).
