The latest statistics from the Greater Rome Board of Realtors show 51 homes sold in August, down from 74 in July and from 78 homes sold in August 2008. The drop offsets what had been several months of improving home sales. But their is good news--for the seller, at least: The average price of a home sold in August was $138,507, up 8 percent from the same month in 2008 and up 10.7 percent from July 2009. A big factor in real estate these days is the $9,800 in tax incentives for first-time buyers or those who haven't owned homes in at least three years.

2) Industry: Shaw to close Ringgold plant, idle 430 workers> Chattanooga

-It is Dalton-based Shaw Industry's fourth major layoff in the state this year, including 390 workers in Calhoun. Those four plants alone account for nearly 1,200 job losses since Jan. 1

>More jobs: Look for the state's first-time unemployment insurance claims report later this week. It is an indicator on how the August jobless rate will look.
